Visitors: Sunday Service Sketch
Sunday Service is at 10:30 am

We would love to see you at our Sunday gathering! Our mission is to embrace all individuals seeking meaning. We welcome you, whoever you are, whatever your tradition, race, sexual orientation, sexual identity, or age.
We at First Unitarian Church attempt to build a more just society. We honor each person. We love what is real and seek language to describe what is ultimate and true. There is a place for you here. In our presence may you walk the ways of truthfulness and service, and through all your days and nights may you experience love.
At our Sunday service you are welcome to come as you are. Most of us choose casual dress! We gather together as a community and sing. One of the best ways to get to know us is to come and listen to the lyrics and appreciate the diversity of the music.
Our service usually contains a reading for the day from any of a variety of traditions and might be in the form of a topical poem, a short story, a bit of philosophy or an excerpt from an essay.
Sermons are delivered by our Minister or a lay speaker; sometimes we observe or participate in a drama or a ritual. Some of the church’s favorite rituals are September’s Water Ceremony – a “welcome back” and kick-off of the formal church year; and June’s Flower Ceremony, to mark the ending of the formal church year. The speakers explore a variety of topics, such as living an ethical and meaningful life, social justice, history and what it says to us, world religions and theological concepts; and poetry and literature and what they have to teach us. Each week is different, but the goal is to touch something deep in each listener’:s heart to help guide the way toward wholeness and peace. During the summer, the pulpit is filled by a variety of speakers, or we share dramatic readings or a hymn sing. Sundays in the summer still represent an oasis in our life travels.
We usually have a children’s story during our service. All children are invited to the front of the sanctuary for a story delivered by the minister or a lay person. After the story, the children process to their RE classes as the congregation sings them out.

A typical Order of Service looks something like this:
Opening Hymn
Chalice Lighting (Information)
Opening Words
Extending the Hand of Fellowship
Children’s Story
Welcome and Announcements
Sharing Joys and Concerns
Offertory
Reading and Meditation
Hymn
Sermon
Closing Hymn
Extinguishing the Chalice
Our Covenant (to each other)

Join us! We look forward to meeting you!
